The watch
Seiko 5 Sports Speedtimer 6139-8040 with one of the most striking dial layouts from the 1970s Seiko catalogue. The green sunburst dial, blue 30-minute chronograph register and orange chronograph hand give this reference a very distinct look, playful but still balanced on the wrist.
The 39mm case wears slightly larger than many vintage Seikos from the same period, making it a very easy modern size. The angular case shape, polished accents and brushed surfaces give the watch plenty of presence without feeling oversized. The day-date display sits neatly at 3 o’clock, while the chronograph is operated by the two pushers on the side of the case. The central orange hand is used for the chronograph function, not as a running seconds hand. Quickset works as it should.
This example is in excellent condition. The dial is clean and vibrant, with strong colours and a very attractive sunburst effect. The case remains sharp and well presented, with only light signs of use. There is a light scratch on the lower lug and a small mark on the crystal just above the centre, both visible on close inspection rather than distracting on the wrist.
The watch is fitted to a good quality aftermarket bracelet from the same era. It suits the watch very well and has the correct 1970s Seiko character, sitting close in appearance to the original bracelet.
A rare and very charismatic Seiko automatic chronograph, especially desirable in this green and blue configuration. Clean, colourful, and genuinely interesting without being loud.
Details
The Seiko 5 Sports Speedtimer line belongs to Seiko’s early generation of automatic chronographs, introduced at a time when the brand was pushing hard into technically advanced, colourful sports watches. These models combined the practical Seiko 5 formula with a proper automatic chronograph movement, often paired with bold 1970s dial designs and compact, wearable case shapes.
Inside this reference is Seiko’s 6139 movement, one of the most important automatic chronograph calibres of its era. It uses a vertical clutch and column wheel, a technically sophisticated setup that gives the chronograph a smooth, precise feel. The layout is simple and purposeful: central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute register, and a day-date display. It is a movement with real historical weight, but also one that still feels very usable today.
