The watch
Rare Seiko Grand Quartz from 1978 in very good condition. The stainless steel “TV dial” case remains unpolished and in excellent shape, showing only light signs of wear.
The white dial features a subtle linen texture and is in mint condition. The mineral crystal has a small scratch near 2 o’clock and displays faint iridescent marks, likely due to natural aging of the anti-reflective coating. These are visible only under certain lighting and angles, and do not affect clarity in regular wear. Do note that the bracelet fits comfortably up to a wrist size of 17 cm.
Details
The Seiko Caliber 9942 is a high-grade analog quartz movement introduced around 1979 by Seiko’s Suwa division in Nagano, Japan. It uses Seiko’s Twin Quartz technology with two quartz crystals (one for timekeeping and one for temperature sensing) to maintain high stability through thermocompensation.
The 9942 offers ±10 seconds per year accuracy. It has a date-only display, five jewels, hacking capability, runs at 32,768 Hz, and measures 26 mm in diameter with a 3.7 mm height.
In Seiko’s late-1970s Twin Quartz range, the 9942 was one of three Grand Quartz calibers, along with the 9940 (no date) and 9943 (day and date). It was positioned just below the Superior line, which included calibers such as the 9980 and 9983 with ±5 seconds per year accuracy.
